Southern metropolitan area with ‘great sports and food’ ranked the best city to retire

This major metropolitan area in the South has been ranked the best city to retire in by a top-tier travel and lifestyle magazine.
The Northern Texas city, Dallas-Fort Worth, covers nearly 400-square-miles, making it the largest metropolitan area in the Southern US. It has a lower cost of living compared to other major US cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco and boasts wonderful sports, restaurant and arts and entertainment scenes, while also offering the best-of-both-worlds suburban-urban lifestyle.
Travel + Leisure ranked Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, the best city for retirement this year. Other cities on the list included Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the “horse and buggy town” touted by many as a top retirement town for its affordability and access to healthcare and hybrid rural-urban lifestyle, and others.
Other popular cities for retirement Charleston, South Carolina; Orlando, Florida; Miami, Florida; Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Cincinnati, Ohio.

The median home price in the metropolitan area is $484,900, according to Realtor.com, with the median household income averaging around $63,985, which is below the national average, according to the US Census.
While property taxes are considered high, the red state has no income law, unlike the blue states of New York and California.
The median home price is nearly double in the New York and Boston metropolitan area and more than double in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, according to Realtor.com. However, it is more expensive than other major metropolitan areas including Chicago.

Dallas has become a growing tech hub in recent years, with many young professionals flocking from places such as California to cut costs and ditch the red tape of the liberal state.
Other Texas towns including New Braunfels, billed as a “vibrant” small town with a “European flair,” rank as top-their retirement towns.
Dallas is where celebrities including Erykah Badu, Norah Jones and Jessica and Ashlee Simpson were born, as well as other major figureheads like investor Mark Cuban and former president George W. Bush and his wife Laura.
